Cruising From Los Angeles? Long Beach vs. San Pedro Cruise Ports: What’s the Difference?

Your cruise says “Los Angeles.” But which terminal do you actually need?

Long Beach and San Pedro are separate cruise ports in the same harbor region. Confirming the right one is the first step toward choosing your airport, hotel, parking, and ride.

Mike’s tip: Check your ship’s terminal before booking a hotel or arranging transportation.

Two ports. Different starting points.

Start with the right hotel area

Long Beach: make time for the waterfront

For a Long Beach departure, start with downtown or waterfront hotels if you want dinner, harbor views, and some exploring before boarding. The Queen Mary, Shoreline Village, and Aquarium of the Pacific are the local stops highlighted in my LA guide.

Check the actual route to your terminal. A hotel described as “waterfront” isn’t automatically an easy walk with luggage.

San Pedro: stay close to the World Cruise Center

For a San Pedro departure, staying in San Pedro can keep embarkation morning straightforward. The LA Waterfront offers harbor views and maritime attractions if you have time to explore.

You can also stay in Long Beach before a San Pedro cruise. Just include the transfer in your budget and leave time for traffic.

Flights, parking, and your ride

Compare the full trip cost before choosing your airport. A lower airfare may be less appealing once you add transportation and travel time.

  • LGB — Long Beach Airport: An option to compare for either port, particularly when your plans center on Long Beach.

  • LAX — Los Angeles International: Compare flight schedules and fares, with a generous cushion for airport logistics and traffic.

  • SNA — John Wayne Airport: Worth considering if the flights fit better or you’re adding an Orange County stay.

When possible, I recommend arriving the day before your cruise. That gives you more cushion if a flight is delayed.

Driving from Arizona, Nevada, or California? Check parking for your actual departure terminal before leaving home. Confirm rates, vehicle restrictions, and any reservation or overflow instructions.

For a taxi, rideshare, or private ride, save the full terminal address and check luggage capacity. For a cruise-line transfer, confirm availability and flight-time requirements. For a closer look at your options, read my airport and cruise port transfer guide.

Before you book, check these four things

  • Your cruise documents: Ship, sailing date, terminal, and berth instructions.

  • Your hotel package: Cancellation terms, parking nights, and whether the shuttle serves your terminal.

  • Your transportation: Pickup location, luggage space, and a realistic traffic cushion.

  • Your sightseeing plans: Opening times, admission, luggage arrangements, and your onward flight.

Quick answers

No. They are separate cruise ports nearby, with different terminals and arrival instructions.

Yes. Plan a transfer to San Pedro and allow enough time for traffic on embarkation morning.

I’d start with the ship and itinerary that fit your vacation, then plan around its departure port. Long Beach may appeal for its waterfront activities; San Pedro can be practical when staying near the World Cruise Center is the priority.
